THE 2011-2012 ROSE & CROWN NEW NOVELS COMPETITION:

NOW OPEN FOR ENTRIES!

Please read these Rules and Guidelines carefully before entering the Rose & Crown New Novels Competition. Your entry is taken as full acceptance of everything included herein.

The 2011-2012 New Novels Competition :

PRIZES: First Prize £200 and guaranteed publishing contract offer; Second Prize £100 and guaranteed publishing contract offer; Third Prize guaranteed publishing contract offer. Note: A publishing contract will also be offered to ALL the best entries we think are of acceptable standard for publication under the Rose & Crown or Sunpenny Publishing imprints (not just the winners!).

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: Final entries must be with us no later than 31st March 2012 (note: extended from 31 January). Winners will be announced by end of June 2012, but this date is dependent upon the number of entries received as this directly impacts the reading and judging time, so it may change.

ENTRY FEE: There is an entry fee to help cover our administration, judging and reader fees, and prize money. The entry fee per manuscript is £18.00 (if paid in UK pounds or online); US$30.00 (if paid in US dollars by check only); ZAR180.00 (if paid into our SA bank account in Rands). Methods of payment are listed at the bottom of this page. Fees are NOT refundable - please ensure you read the rules carefully before entering.

COMPETITION RULES:

  • Entry submission indicates acceptance of all rules, guidelines, terms and conditions.
  • Manuscripts must fit into the CHRISTIAN INSPIRATIONAL ROMANCE genre. Intelligent Romance with a Christian Inspirational flavour! With strong characters and storylines, and locations around the world, your story may be contemporary or otherwise. It may vary in style to include humour, travel, adventure, crime/detective, Western, military, etc. As long as it has a romance at its heart and a Christian worldview, no gratuitous sex, violence, or foul language etc, and follows the general submission guidelines for a Rose & Crown manuscript, it will fit the competition.
  • The competition is open to anyone of any age worldwide (except employees of Sunpenny Limited and their immediate families) provided that the fee is received in either British Pounds, Euros, US Dollars or South African Rands. We cannot pay Forex on other currencies, so please ensure your currency is correct, or we will ask you to compensate for any bank charges we incur from your payment. Payments made by credit card in your own currency are fine.
  • Entry manuscripts should not have been published in any form. If they are accepted for publication during the course of the competition, you are required to let us know; the manuscript will then no longer be eligible to win a prize or a contract (this is a New Novels competition - and we don't want to get you into trouble with the company that has offered to publish; they will require the rights!).
  • Prize winners will be notified by email and named on the web site, on our Twitter tweets, on Facebook, our blogs, and possibly elsewhere - we reserve the right to market the winners in the media - with an article about themselves; please ensure you supply a valid email address with your entry, even if sent in by post. If you don't have an email address we can let you know your entry has been arrived only if you include a stamped self-addressed postcard to be sent back to you.
  • Please submit AS EMAIL ATTACHMENTS all of the following documents:
    (a) a separate cover page with your name, address, email address, phone number, title of book, and word count;
    (b) a synopsis of about 1-2 pages; and
    (c) the FULL manuscript in digital format;

    (d) all of the above as digital files, attached to an email or on a CD or DVD, preferably in Word format but others such as OpenOffice and WordPerfect, or .RTF, are also acceptable. If you prefer you may send an editable PDF file. Check with us if you aren't sure.

We no longer require a paper copy as we now send entries via email and Kindle to judges. HOWEVER, if you can ONLY submit a paper copy we will accept this too. Please try to avoid this, though.
  • We cannot undertake to return hard copy (paper) manuscripts; please do NOT include an SAE or ask for return in any other way. Manuscripts are frequently used for making notes, are scribbled on, read in the bath, and sometimes eaten by the pet camel. They aren't in a fit state to send back to you, so please don't waste your money on an SAE.
  • Do not send us the only copy you have if you can't print it out again!
  • Manuscripts must be a minimum of 50,000 words and a maximum of 100,000 words, on any subject as long as they are in keeping with the described aims of the Rose & Crown Books imprint as described elsewhere on this web site: Christian Inspirational Romance. How much of the content is of a Christian nature is up to you, but they must contain at least one Christian character (and therefore will have a natural Christian content flow), both main characters should be Christians by the end, and the content must be in keeping with Christian/Biblical principles and a Christian world view. We really are looking for solid Christian play-through and hopefully a lesson learned, or a message transmitted within the story. Please read our general Submission Guidelines to understand our focus.
  • Manuscripts must not promote racism, gratuitous sex or violence, foul language, or anything else that does not conform to good traditional Christian family and moral values (and we get to be the judges of this, without discussion).
  • FORMAT: Please stick to the Formatting Guidelines below these rules; this makes life a great deal easier for our judges - no, really. Please.
  • Prizes will be paid in British Pounds, via PayPal, cheque/check, or any other reasonable, cost-effective method that suits both parties. Any bank fees or foreign exchange dutiese must be paid by the winner.
  • Prizes must be claimed within 30 days of being published on the web site and contacted by email. After 30 days, prizes will be forfeited.
  • All entries must be written in English. Other languages will not be accepted.
  • You may enter as many different works as you like, as long as each is accompanied by the correct entry fee.
  • Entries must be in entirety the original work of the entrant, and the entrant must fully own all the necessary rights for the work to enter this competition. Entrants take full responsibility for copyright issues. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
  • Writers retain copyright, and we believe our contract is a very fair one to both sides. Entrants reserve the right to refuse or negotiate the terms of the contract; we want a good outcome for both parties.
  • The judges' decision is final; no individual correspondence or disputes will be entered into.
  • Deadlines and any other dates may be postponed by us without notice for any legitimate reason, and we reserve the right to adjust these rules without notice.
  • Entrants are responsible for completing the submission process effectively. We cannot take responsibility for entries lost in the post or in cyberspace. If you encounter problems, please let us know timeously.
  • We reserve the right to alter these rules at any time without notice should it become necessary to do so. We also reserve the right to reduce the prize money should we not receive enough entries to cover our costs.

HOW TO FORMAT YOUR ENTRIES:

  • Please supply a separate cover page with Title, Entrant Name, Address, Email, Phone Number, and the entry's Word Count.
  • Please supply a proper synopsis (not a blurb!) which clearly tells the story in full, including ending. No secrets; we have to know how it turns out!
  • Please supply the FULL manuscript. Each page must have a header containing page number and title of the story ONLY. Do not include your name or any other identifier on any page of the entry itself. (All entries are given an ID reference number and separated from the cover page to ensure fair, anonymous judging.)
  • If you MUST submit paper: Do not staple your work. Our fingers and our time both suffer
  • Entries must be typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only, with a good inch of margin all round. (Neatly set out as you would a professional book manuscript submission.)
  • We cannot accept hand-written entries.
  • Please, no fancy fonts! Use straight forward 12-point Times New Roman, or a similar serif font - avoid Arial or other sans-serifs, as they are harder on the eyes in the long run.
  • Please check and polish work carefully; if your entry is too liberally sprinkled with poor grammar and spelling, it will not be considered for the final judging. Writing is a language craft, and an artist must (a) know their craft and (b) take pride in their work. If you don't care, we won't be inclined to, either! (Exceptions are made for dyslexic or otherwise handicapped entrants; please make a note on your entry if this is the case.)
  • File formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .wpd, .rtf, .txt. Please scan for viruses BEFORE sending.
