NOTE: There have been changes made to the entry deadline, announcements date, and entry fees, after requests from entrants.

Please read these Rules and Guidelines carefully before entering the Rose & Crown New Novels Competition. Your entry is taken as full acceptance of everything included herein:

PRIZES: First Prize £200 and guaranteed publishing contract offer; Second Prize £100 and guaranteed publishing contract offer; Third Prize guaranteed publishing contract offer. Note: A publishing contract will also be offered to ALL the best entries we think are of acceptable standard for publication under the Rose & Crown or Sunpenny Publishing imprints (not just the winners!). Also note that if there are enough entries, cash prizes may rise in value.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: Final entries must be with us no later than 15th February 2009. Winners will be announced by end of May, but this date is dependent upon the number of entries received as this directly impacts the reading and judging time, so it may change.

ENTRY FEE: There is an entry fee to help cover our administration, judging and reader fees, and prize money. The entry fee per manuscript is £15.00 / US$30.00 / ZAR250.00 (special allowance for Southern African entries if paid into our SA bank account in Rands). Methods of payment are listed at the bottom of this page. Fees are NOT refundable - please ensure you read the rules carefully before entering.

COMPETITION RULES:

  • Entry submission indicates acceptance of all rules, guidelines, terms and conditions.
  • The competition is open to anyone of any age worldwide (except for the four Directors of Sunpenny Publishing/Rose & Crown Books and their immediate families) provided that the fee is received in either British Pounds, Euros, US Dollars or South African Rands. We cannot pay Forex on other currencies, so please ensure your currency is correct, or we will ask you to compensate for any bank charges we incur from your payment.
  • Entry manuscripts should not have been published in any form. If they are accepted for publication during the course of the competition, you are required to let us know; the manuscript will then no longer be eligible to win a prize or a contract (this is a New Novels competition - and we don't want to get you into trouble with the company that has offered to publish; they will require the rights!).
  • Prize winners will be notified by email and named on the web site with an article about themselves; please ensure you supply a valid email address with your entry, even if sent in by post. If you don't have an email address we can let you know your entry has been arrived only if you include a stamped self-addressed postcard to be sent back to you.
  • Please submit:
    (a) a separate cover page with your name, address, email address, phone number, title of book, and word count;
    (b) a synopsis of about 1-2 pages; and
    (c) the FULL manuscript.
  • We cannot undertake to return manuscripts; please do NOT include an SAE or ask for return in any other way.
  • Manuscripts must be a minimum of 40,000 words and a maximum of 150,000 words, in any style and on any subject as long as they are in keeping with the described aims of the Rose & Crown imprint as described elsewhere on this web site: Inspirational Romance. How much of the content is of a Christian nature is up to you, but they must contain at least one Christian character, and the content must be in keepingwith Christian/Biblical principles and a Christian world view.
  • Manuscripts must not promote racism, gratuitous sex or violence, foul language, or anything else that does not conform to good traditional Christian family and moral values (and we get to be the judges of this).
  • We require submission either by hard copy (paper), OR by email, OR on a CD or DVD. See addresses at bottom of this page.
  • FORMAT: Please stick to the formatting guidelines below these rules; this makes life a great deal easier for our judges - no, really. Please.
  • Prizes will be paid in British Pounds, via PayPal, cheque/check, or any other reasonable, cost-effective method that suits both parties.
  • Prizes must be claimed within 30 days of being published on the web site and contacted by email. After 30 days, prizes will be forfeited.
  • All entries must be written in English. Other languages will not be accepted.
  • You may enter as many different works as you like, as long as each is accompanied by an entry fee.
  • Entries must be in entirety the original work of the entrant, and the entrant must fully own all the necessary rights for the work to enter this competition. Entrants take full responsibility for copyright issues. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
  • Writers retain copyright, and we believe our contract is a very fair one to both sides. Entrants reserve the right to refuse or negotiate the terms of the contract; we want a good outcome for both parties.
  • The judges' decision is final; no individual correspondence or disputes will be entered into.
  • Deadlines and any other dates may be postponed by us without notice for any legitimate reason, and we reserve the right to adjust these rules without notice.
  • Entrants are responsible for completing the submission process effectively. We cannot take responsibility for entries lost in the post or in cyberspace. If you encounter problems, please let us know timeously.

HOW TO FORMAT YOUR ENTRIES:

  • Please supply a separate cover page with Title, Entrant Name,  Address, Email, Phone Number, and the entry's Word Count.
  • Please supply a synopsis (not a blurb) which clearly tells the story in full, including ending. No secrets; we have to know how it turns out!
  • Please supply the FULL manuscript. Each page must have a header containing page number and title of the story ONLY. Do not include your name or any other identifier on any page of the entry itself. (All entries are given an ID reference number and separated from the cover page to ensure fair, anonymous judging.)
  • Do not staple your work. Our fingers and our time both suffer
  • Entries must be typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only, with a good inch of margin all round. (Neatly set out as you would a professional book manuscript submission - indented paragraphs, without gaps, just as in a book.)
  • We cannot accept hand-written entries.
  • Please, no fancy fonts! Use straight forward 12-point Times New Roman, or a similar serif font - avoid Arial or other sans-serifs, as they are harder on the eyes in the long run.
  • Please check and polish work carefully; if your entry is too liberally sprinkled with poor grammar and spelling, it will not be considered for the final judging. Writing is a language craft, and an artist must (a) know their craft and (b) take pride in their work. If you don't care, we won't be inclined to, either! (Exceptions are made for dyslexic or otherwise handicapped entrants; please make a note on your entry if this is the case.)
  • File formats: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .wpd, .rtf, .txt. Please scan for viruses BEFORE sending.

TO ENTER:

Submitting your entry indicates acceptance of the rules as above; no refunds except for double payments. The entry fee can be paid either online by credit card or account with PayPal or Nochex (see below), or by cheque/check or bank deposit (see special note for Southern Africans). If you make your payment online, we will receive a notification automatically, and your entry will be acknowledged. If it has not been acknowledged within 48 hours, please contact us - something may have gone astray.
